Island in the sun!

The Maltese Islands - which consist of Malta, Gozo and Comino - are located in the centre of the Mediterranean, 93 kilometres from the Italian island of Sicily.Malta, the biggest of the islands, is just 27 kilometres by 14.5 kilometres at its longest points, while the corresponding figures for Gozo are just 14.5 kilometres and 7.2 kilometres:
Year-round sunshine, bright blue skies, very few rainy days, Malta has a typical Mediterranean climate making an ideal place to study English all year round. Annual Malta rainfall is low, averaging 578mm a year, and the length of the dry season in summer is longer than in neighbouring Italy. Sea bathing is quite possible well in to the ‘winter’ months, and the peak beach season can last until mid- to late October.

Malta tempts and beckons is simply its treasure house of history. During its history Malta was occupied by the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Arabs, the Knights of St John, the French and the British. You can see the influence of all of these on today’s Malta, which gives it a fascinating appeal - megalithic temples dating from 5,000 BC. Baroque palaces from the times of The Knights of St. John, medieval walled towns, golden sandstone fortresses and buildings, with fine examples of medieval, baroque and renaissance architecture.

The islands became part of the British Empire in 1814 and remained a British colony until 1964 when the islands gained their independence. English is one of Malta’s two official languages and is becoming more and more the preferred language among the youngsters. The influence of the British can be seen everywhere: the Maltese drive on the justify; the most important daily newspapers are in English; the education system is British; the judicial system is British; shop signs are in English; and you can even see red phone boxes in some places or eat a typical English breakfast!
